silverthorne: Painting of a cougar sneaking through underbrush (Arianthe and Elder)

My very first huntard question

Which is:

I understand that to learn certain pet skills, you have to tame a pet with that skill.

What I'd like clarification on:

Does taming the pet automatically teach you any unique skills it has?
Or does it make that skill available to buy at a pet trainer?
Or is there something you have to do with the pet itself to acquire the skill?

Pretty much, the instructions I'm finding say 'tame new pet; learn new skill; teach new skill to older pet (if applicable)'. But the 'how' part of the hunter learning the new skill seems to be missing...

When you tame the new pet, you have to fight with it a few times - I had two or three fights before it told me I learned the new skill.

On the other hand, I suggest waiting a week, because the entire pet skill system is going to be redone with the 3.02 patch which is expected next Tuesday. So don't worry about it.

*nods* Yeah, someone at wow ladies pointed that out. ^^;

I was going to try to give it a shot tonight (although it's getting late), just to see how it works. Probably wait until tomorrow though, if I try it at this point.

Thanks, BTW. :)

I think you had to level it up. I don't know for sure though. I never really was that good with the whole pet thing. I just got a boar cause it eats anything and has that nifty charge move.

Also, how's your macro/mod working?

[identity profile] silverthorne.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
General answer has been 'catch it, keep it with you for a few fights, you'll learn the skills (and it'll show up in your combat log), and that's it'.

Also: it won't matter by next week. Heh.

I'm still tweaking the macro. I can't get the 'pat/pet' action to work (I think I'm missing brackets around Elder's name or something), and Ari just emotes in the general direction she's facing when she talks to him (Which looks silly), so I don't use the macro often, anyway. If I could figure out how to get her to just target Elder and pet him, that would be great, but it ain't happening.

/target Elder
/pat

That's all you need. Copy that as it is into a clean macro and it should do the job. Ari won't turn to face him, but it will say something like "Ari gently pats Elder."

aha! that's what I was doing wrong! I had /pat Elder. :P

thank you! :)

Oh! What got me started on the whole kick of trying to find it out was seeing someone in one of my wow groups putting up a macro that would pet a certain target group, like any dwarves or tauren in the immediate area. I'm thinking maybe that's where I got the idea that maybe I needed brackets around Elder's name, because I think they had them around the target type...
