silverthorne: Painting of a cougar sneaking through underbrush (Arianthe and Elder)

My very first huntard question

Which is:

I understand that to learn certain pet skills, you have to tame a pet with that skill.

What I'd like clarification on:

Does taming the pet automatically teach you any unique skills it has?
Or does it make that skill available to buy at a pet trainer?
Or is there something you have to do with the pet itself to acquire the skill?

Pretty much, the instructions I'm finding say 'tame new pet; learn new skill; teach new skill to older pet (if applicable)'. But the 'how' part of the hunter learning the new skill seems to be missing...

/target Elder
/pat

That's all you need. Copy that as it is into a clean macro and it should do the job. Ari won't turn to face him, but it will say something like "Ari gently pats Elder."

Oh! What got me started on the whole kick of trying to find it out was seeing someone in one of my wow groups putting up a macro that would pet a certain target group, like any dwarves or tauren in the immediate area. I'm thinking maybe that's where I got the idea that maybe I needed brackets around Elder's name, because I think they had them around the target type...
