HP Ficlet

I'm sure this has been done before...but I'm in that kind of mood. Hopefully it's not too terribly bad.

First HP canon fanfic...

Post time from 4:45pm to 5:08pm, including editing--ignoring the fact that LJ was in read only mode the first attempt to post.

--What Peter Feels--

"Put that away, will you? Before Wormtail wets himself from excitement,"

It was said with all the bored excitement that Sirius could muster. Peter felt himself flush pink at the comment, but held his tongue, watching as James tucked the Snitch away in his pocket. He was determined not to let the bait get to him this time, even though what he really wanted to do was round in on Sirius. But that would be bad, and for more than one reason. He'd get teased for not being able to take a little joke, for one. For another, it would probably make James look down on him even more.

Couldn't have that. Bad enough he was already the butt of most jokes between the two friends. He was the shortest, the chubbiest, and the worst looking of the lot. He was neither the best at Quidditch, nor the best at hexes. Mostly, he was good at cheering on the others and playing at 'fetch' when someone had forgotten something. Or 'snitch' when he'd run across someone he knew the others would love to give a hard time to.

They'd even laughed at him one he'd figured out his animagus form--teasing him about being vermin. Not one of them thought about the fact that rats were smarter than dogs, fiercer fighters than stags...more adaptable then wolves. Even Remus had seemed embarassed...and that in turn made Peter feel worse. Even as something almost unique, he'd managed to bollux it up and turn himself into a joke.

He knew he was considered more of a tagalong, but that was all right. Usually, it was okay, and it kept him safe from the bigger, nastier bullies at any rate--of which there were plenty. And he didn't hate them, really...

But it would have been nice to be treated...well, like them for a change.

Peter continued to hold his silence as the other three nattered on. Sirius, as usual, was bored, the big prat. Remus offered his book and the black haired young man waved it off. No academic, he.

But he certainly got the girls.

Peter fidgeted a little as Remus' ploy failed. But James' next comment had them all looking up.

Snape. Snivellus. Perfect.

Peter's wretched feeling was gone in a flash as he watched James and Sirius round in on their favorite prey. He was in the clear for now--a more exciting, more prominent hazing was about to happen. And no one would care if Peter laughed or cheered them on now, because the target was despised if possible, even more than Peter himself.

And maybe, just maybe, if he could manage to get the right jibe in at old greasy-pants, he'd be popular for a day or two.

It was better than the alternative.

That rings so true. I can imagine that Peter felt very much like that. Excellent first try at a short timed fic. :)

Thank you...^^;

It just sort of...

Well, it hit me over the head while I was taking a bath...^^;

I usually don't write for canon characters at all--although I'm usually sure of my abilities to keep a cannon world straight, I'm painfully aware that I'm not in the original author's brain, and therefore don't really know what's driving the book characters...so presuming to write for his/her charries seems a little unconfortable.
