Sort of a rant, sort of a recommendation so that this does not happen to you.

1) Make sure the patient is still going to be there when the flowers arrive.

2) Find out what courier/delivery service the flower company is going to use. If it's FedEx, UPS, or DHL, then the flowers will be sent through the hospital receiving dock along with all the other supplies and cna take anywhere from next day to three days to get there, depending on how much money you're willing to spend. Courier/Flowershop delivered flowers generally end up going to the volunteer/information desk first, and then taken to the right place from there.

3) If it is going to be sent by way of one of the three carriers mentioned in #2, make sure that someone will be in the receivig area at the expected delivery time so that your flowers are not refused, sent back, or left sitting in the receiving dock for an interminable amount of time (like, oh say, the entire weekend).

4) Most receiving docks in hospitals are closed on the weekends. Hello, budget cuts. This means if you aim for a weekend, chances are the flowers won't be delivered until Monday. Which equates to dead flowers and/or a delivery that misses the patient because the patient is discharged. Call first and check for times. If the hours are limited or non-existant, you're better off with waiting, hand delivering, or even sending the flowers to the patient's home after they're discharged.

5) If your flowers still end up missing the mark, the receiving clerk has one option only, which is to call you/the intended recipient (if they're have the information and are able to get hold of you), tell you the flowers are there, and ask if you want to come get them or if you want to donate them. No, the clerk cannot send them to you--the hospital generally does not allow that. Chances are, by the time they get there anyway, they will have been dead after spending several days in a dark box with no water.

In other words, choose wisely, know where and when, and adjust your plans accordingly. No one, not even the very rich, wants to blow fifty-plus dollars on a bunch of flowers that never serve their intended purpose. And the receiving clerk would really like to be able to get your stuff to where it needs to go ASAP and with as little mishap as possible.

Thank you.
