silverthorne: (Arianthe and Elder)

Of course, Geekie ran me through the Scarlet Monestary (all of it) before I actually got the quest (which I now have), but I've gone back a few times to try it. So far, I've only managed to clear the one wing up to the Houndmaster (Haven't even bothered with the other wings yet), once while the quest was yellow, and again yesterday when it was green. I'm having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to get those damned hyenas to come at us, preferably only one or two at a time, before we go after the Houndsmaster himself.

It usually ends up that my pet ends up by the master and one hyena, and the other two come after me, so I end up running into the fray so that I can volley the hell out of everything. Problem being is that in that little alcove, there's no room to back up and use my bow (MUCH better damage with my bow) and the other more destrutive abilities, and I can feign death and let Elder take the brunt of it (he can down two and a half all by himself before it gets ugly. I'm so proud of him. :) ), but of course, as soon as I pop up to Mend Pet him, I get attacked again, and it goes to hell from there.

I don't have any set rotation (no macros), and staying out of range also requires being 'out of sight' in regards to using Mend Pet on Elder, so staying out of the little enclosure isn't an option thanks to that stupid wall. I know the easiest solution is 'wait until it's grey for you', or, alternatively, 'Just pug it!', but I'd like to do it on my own...preferably when it's 'in range' for me.

I'm pretty sure you can do the Mend Pet HoT in combat and at a great distance. Don't remember the cooldown on it though, so that could be a mess.

Though, really, instances are not in any way, shape or form, meant for soloing, especially if they're still green/yellow for you in terms of level. They're all made with group dynamics in mind, and this is especially clear in the Cathedral wing. Even a hunter's going to have trouble clearing that entire end area, given that they only have ice traps as a means of CC, AND then having to tackle Mograine and Whitemane at the same time at the end of it. (That's probably impossible, in fact, given that you'd have him beating on you, and her healing like a mofo.) So either way, you're really in for a Sisyphean task here.

Also, you can't pull the hounds without pulling the houndmaster. They all come as a unit. Again, CC is key here!

Oh, and ignore what I said at first about Mend Pet and all that. Hurr, I wasn't reading your paragraph there right. I AM SO TIRED.

I haven't been a low level hunter in over a year, but I'm wondering why you can pull aggro so fast if you Mend Pet. Could you perhaps put Elder on the Houndmaster, Mend Pet, then Feign Death so that he's being healed and the hounds will change their mind about who to go to? You can, of course, drop a Freezing Trap before FD that way you lower the amount of hyenas poor Elder has on him. What I would normally do is put my pet on the elite first so they would be first on aggro, then put them on a nonelite so I could pewpew it down and they would still have aggro on it - if not, Mend Pet, and re-Feign.

I hope that made sense...I just woke up and I think I'm rambling xD

When an instance quest is green, that only means it should be easy for a full group to do. It's going to have to be grey for a long time before you can expect to solo it. If you really have your heart set on going it alone, I'd say wait a few more levels before trying it again.

Those hounds and the master come as a group, sadly. But he occasionally drops a dog whistle (3 charges) that calls a hound to come fight next to you for like ten minutes or something. I was so happy to get that once, but it's a little heartbreaking when time is up. The dog lets out a squeal and keels over dead. :(

Good luck!

No doubt that I'm trying for the impossible...but then, that's what makes it fun for me. (It also forces me to use all the instance skills I never use while soloing) :)

Nice to know that you get all or nothing--I can quit wasting time on trying to seperate one from the other, then. Also means I actually need to start practicing traps, I guess. XD.

Yeah, if that wall wasn't there, I could stay out on the green (I've got a very nice bow range, TYVM :D ), FD each time the hounds came after me and then be healer to Elder's tank, with the occasional Hunters Mark and Pew Pew to help out.

But...there's that wall. Only other thing I can think to do is to draw them to me out on the green, keep Elder on passive until they're where I can see them and there's room to back away and still keep track of them all and then set him lose on them and back off once he's got the aggro.

I tried that, but still got two hounds on my case (they'll run at me as soon as the Master shouts 'release the hounds!' once Elder attacks him). My solution to that was to run to where the master and the other hound was (since I can't Mend Pet past the wall, and the two hounds are too much for me to handle on my own), volley until my own health got critical, Mend Pet and then FD'd. The problem is that it's such a small area, that as soon as I pop up to Mend Pet again, they're right there, so it's a little hard to miss the suddenly alive again hunter, and I get munched.

*nods* Yeah, I kinda figure I'll have to, because the game isn't giving me the option to pick them off one at a time without the others dog-piling me (pun intended). It's frustrating because I can clear the area up to him without too much problem and no death. I was just hoping maybe I'd missed something in how to get them seperated so that they weren't all chowing down on me at the same time. Ah well. Like I told Del up above, if nothing else, it forces me to practice techniques and shots I never use when soloing.

Aw...that's sweet (calling the hound) and very sad (dying) at the same time. I'd probably only be able to do it once, and then feel bad about the dog keeling over. :/

Thanks! :)
