So I'm watching Winter Solstice, which takes place in New Jersey. It's standard fair, but a couple of things came to mind.

1) I guess I still more or less sound like I'm from Jersey, if how they were talking (especially 'dad') is any indication.

2) Damn, I miss NJ. Trees. Green. Willows. Town sidewalks. Fireflies.

Actually, no one is still there--'my' family is actually out in Tucson (except for Dad, who ends up out there all the time anyway), but I still identify with and actually love the state itself.

Well, okay, that's not 100% honest. Mom and her mom are there, but...yeah. Also Dad wouldn't be THAT far away, being in North Carolina, so he'd be within driving distance if I wanted to visit and get some parental wisdom.

Or, you know, just bug the bejesus out of him sometimes. :)

it depends on where in Jersey you're actually talking about. You do NOT sound at all like the Newark area, which is most of my experience.

As to fireflies, well, small crop this year. Something about the really late first freeze and all the water. Still, they don't cut down the trees once they're over 20 feet and put a car park on them ;-)

Nope, Mid-Jersey. Lawerenceville, Trenton, Hightstown, Seaside Heights, etc. I know that I'm not as thick-in-the-accent sounding as Mr. Bon Jovi, but I also know that I don't have Newark (which is influenced by New York), or South Jersey (which I think, IIRC, is where the people that say 'Joisey' come from...actually, I've never heard anyone from Jersey say that, so I keep blaming it on Brooklanders pretending to be from Jersey. XD. ).

But yeah, I would be more central, starting south. And it's faded for me, but I still shape the words the same.
