The most frustrating thing about my job...
Oct. 2nd, 2007 12:08 pmIs that if I get a creative idea, nine times out of ten, I'm no where near a sheet of paper that I can (safely) at least scribble the outline or general idea on. (Packing slips, although often in hand, are a real bad idea for various reasons. :) ).
I am also one of those people that, although gifted with high intelligence, was also 'gifted' with the ability to promptly forget an idea, picture, or name if I cannot get it down right away and/or get distracted or hung up in doing something else. Occasionally, I can pull it back later. Usually, though, it's gone with the current of my thoughts, which are constantly here, there, and everywhere else.
This is part of the reason I would have never made it as a musician even if I'd had more training on the 'read/write music' part of it, and more discipline in regards to practicing what skills I did have (voice and piano). I've come up with snatches of songs, lyrics, even parts of full scores in my head before. They're generally gone five minutes after I've stopped humming them. They simply don't stick around.
It also makes art and writing difficult. I can hang onto images and ideas a little longer, with images more so than words, but if I wait long enough, they, too, are gone as well. Not a good condition to be in when at least seven hours of your necessary working day has nothing to do with sitting at a desk and creating things (and that's really what you want to be doing with your life, but you have to snatch that in bits and pieces if you want to be able to pay your bills).
What makes it even worse for me, is that my brain also has this cruel tendency of coming up with said ideas while I'm up and away. Physical activity, like music and certain movies, fuel my imagination and off it goes, coming up with some pretty freaking incredible stuff.
And keeps going because I can't get it down fast enough.
:/
