Cream shadows are the way to go, srsly. Also never ever ever line the inner rim of your lower lids with anything, no matter how hypoallergenic it says it is. You're probably much too sensible ever to have done that, but I know a lot of people who do it all the time.
Re. mascara: I've had good results with Lash Architect mascara from L'Oreal...in fact L'Oreal cosmetics in general except the execrable "Telescopic" mascara, which you should avoid. I remember that clear gel mascara too; look around, someone else might've started making one.
