I think employers use it as part of a measure of how the employee will be.
If you have a period in the past of late payments but are current, employers understand that everyone goes through tough patches. But if someone has a bunch of charge-offs and a long period of late payments (or sporadic patches of them) it can indicate a person that is not very responsible.
I wouldn't worry too much about that. Coupled with your work history (which they can readily access since it isn't like you are applying at a completely different company) that should negate a less than perfect credit report.
And I had a credit check done when I applied for my current job six years ago. and I don't handle money in any shape or form
