So here I am in my 37-year old, no make-up, looking too smug for my own good, pic. See Icon. Two weeks recent, right after I hacked my own hair.
And yes, that is my real hair color.
So...my cat is dying.
Eighteen years old--she's been with me through all of my legal adult life. She's been there when I was happy, sad, suicidal, homicidal. She was there for all my break-ups, the boyfriend who sized an engagement ring on my finger and then gave it to another, the death of my uber-sweet high school love, and the rape by my uncle. She's moved with me everywhere since I left my dad's house, and she's never failed to greet me when I came home.
Independent to a fault, she'd still want to sit on my lap for hours to purr and be petted. A single look was enough for her to follow, come, get down off of things she shouldn't have been on, and to know when she was making a pest of herself. Out of all my cats, she was the only one who knew how to sit on my lap while I was drawing or typing without getting in the way.
She gave 'hugs' when I'd hold her. She'd sleep curled around the top of my head. She'd follow me around for no other reason than to rub on my feet with every step I took.
She was my best and most loyal friend.
Right now, she's on my lap, one paw curled over my knee, her head resting on my right wrist. It's making it hard to type, but I'm not going to make her move. She's breathing so hard her lips are sinking in and out with each breath. Yesterday, her body started caving in. She has the dander and bad breath of the dying.
But she's still purring, still kneading with her one paw.
So I'm gonna let her sit here until she wants down. Because after eighteen years of putting up with a crazy human woman, she deserves to have her final memories of this place be happy.

Date: 2006-05-28 03:44 pm (UTC)I know the words may sound hollow compared to your grief, but you have my deepest sympathies. If you need to talk, or I can do anything, let me know.
Perhaps it might cheer you up to post some pics of her as a kitten if you have them, or any other pictures of her.
