You need to have something in between the horrifying parts or it just gets boring after a while. Makes me glad Derek has more of a life now than just 'gotta hunt the vampires'.
What I try to do is pull up how I feel when I watch a horror flick that scares/freaks me out/gives me the willies, and try to keep that feeling in the back of my mind while I write. It's almost like acting in a way--only you confine it to text and stuff while you're still drawing off of it. If the feeling you remember is matching the feeling you get when you've written something, then I figure you're doing good.
...Personally, I think I do an okay job, but not stellar.

Date: 2006-06-29 12:51 am (UTC)For some reason, I always get her confused with Tanya Huff, who also started a series about a woman police detective dealing with the supernatural. I only read the first book in that series, but it had a 'helpful' vampire in it, IIRC.
