...So who else finds having a person suddenly and randomly adding you to their flist using some sort of search script program annoying? Especially when from what you can tell, you and they have nothing in common?

Someone friended my main RP LJ yesterday doing that. It's the third time within a month that's happened, too. Which is why I'm asking. Whatever happened to actually talking to people and finding out what they're like?

It's only bad when the person's clearly a serial adder and just wants a big f-list so they look popular.

And now I'm curious; who was the user who added ya?

something like 'exterminatehumans'.

Obviously young, bit of a goof from what I could tell. And a little bit of 'tude (Yeah, I checked out the LJ--always do in case it's a pup that interacted with Derek once or twice and I just wasn't remembering off hand)

Same person added me, actually, too. I fucking hate that.

Oh, so you know who I was talking about.

How do they determine who they add, anyway? Any clue?

Its happened to me twice. They've all got a huge 'tude and serious issues about people's privacy; their attitude of "well if you don't like it just ban me!" bugs the shit out of me. No, how about you stop being an asshat and leave me alone, since I have no idea who in the blue hell you are? At least fucking introduce yourself first. It'd be different if any of them were actually interesting or polite, or asked first.

They use a friending bot, which is illegal by LJ's TOS. It friends so many random people within a few letters of the alphabet, I think, and if within one hour that person doesn't add you back it unfriends them. It's stupid, and totally disrespectful.

Hope you don't mind the way I added you. I didn't do THAT but I did base it on common interests and the look of your journal, without conversing with you first. I'm a bit shy of jumping into conversations I haven't been invited to, otherwise I would have talked to you first.

I didn't mind that at all. I had an idea of who you were, and like you said, we had common interests. That, and you personally sought me out. And that's cool.

What happened with this guy was that he just randomly added a bunch of people, apparantly using some sort of search bot, and then was all 'haha added you, either add back or STFU'.

And, well, when it's an RP journal, and your pup already knows five million people, it gets a little confusing. (That, and I'm admittedly a bit paranoid about people I don't know just popping up and going 'HI I ADDED YOU DUDE!').

I like meeting new folks--I just don't like 'meeting' them as part of a mass flisting event (unless it's someone who just joined the same comm as me, and they're just adding all the comm members)

Yeah, those things kind of bug me too. I mean, I don't especially care that some random Russian person has one of my RP accounts friended, but...um......why? I mean, I really doubt she's putting Tetu's rambling entries into a translator, you know?

I always wonder what these people make of the first few posts when they 'accidentally' friend an RPG journal, especially with some of the weird things that can go on in some of the games, especially if they themselves don't game on LJ.

Tell me about it.

I always did wonder what some people made of Rau's entries.

When I first moved to Albany, I used LJ's 'find users by location' function to troll for other LJ users in Albany. I looked for people with at least five interests in common with mine, and added about ten or twelve, just so I could watch their posts, and see if they were the sort of people I'd like to get to know.

Several of them are still my friends now -- Chaoticerotic, Botia, and Dodging Fate, amoungst them.

But if they've no interests in common, I can't see why they'd just be adding you. I mean, unless they like the artwork?

And that I don't have a problem with. It's a live person looking people up, and actually checking out the people they're friending.

But these last three incidents played out as [livejournal.com profile] chiss up above said--it was a spambot, and this last time (last night) when I posted to the owner of the LJ that he'd friended an RPG journal and not a real person's LJ, he was all 'STFU and just don't friend it back then!'.

So not only was it 'who is this?!', but the guy was rude too, when all I was doing was letting him know was that Derek's LJ was an RPG journal, and probably not what he meant to friend.

Hips was friended AGES ago by an RD fan I've seen floating around on LJ. I...don't think she got it was RP. Since a lot of Hip's interests are RD related, I think she just went OH ANOTHER FAN and friended her.

At least you're not getting BananaHoedown AIM messages?
