Speculation (of course completely off because I doubt Rowling has more then a cursory sense of 'magical' theory...^^;

Gryffindor--Fire
Slytherin--Water
Ravenclaw--Air
Hufflepuff--Earth


Keeping in mind that most pagan 'traditions' think this way, or very closely to it:

Fire--Red--Action (sometimes healing) associated with Solar symbols

Water--Green--Emotion, subtlety, associated with Lunar symbols

Air--Blue--Mental facilities--magics that are closer to Eastern philosphy's

Earth--Brown (or really any color associated with 'earth tones')--Healing, balancing, stability...


Just a thought that crops up from time to time...
