Now, I got the whole moral idea behind anti-abortionism. I don't agree with them, but I get where they're coming from, and I'm not exactly a fan of the procedure myself. They're as welcome to their opinion and how it affects their own lives as the next person though.

But get this.

Not one of these people can do anything but parrot the usual 'but it's taking a human life and that's wrong in the eyes of God!' line. They can't even get into the logistics of what it would mean and what would happen to the people involved in the activity if it were made illegal. Including the mother.

They don't seem to get that if this is made law, the women who had the abortions will be subject to said secular law just as much as the doctors and clinics who performed them. And if the law defines abortion as a form of murder...

Well...I'm sure those of you with half a brain cell can figure the rest out for yourself.

This is why just parroting a belief or idea or ideal is a really BAD thing, folks.

I probably could not be counted on to have a rational response to people like that, other than:

Yeah? Is rape wrong in God's eyes? How about date rape? Date rape drugging? Getting women drunk to have sex with them? Sexual abuse by family members? Rape of coma victims and the mentally ill?

Women who are forced into or trapped in marriages where the spouse beats her?

...only less coherent and more rage-filled.

Well, again, the problem is that they aren't really looking at any issue other than the 'killing is wrong' one. They're not looking at circumstances, or, indeed, repurcussions and consequences of what they're pushing.

And that's the problem. It's not even that these are internally cruel people...they just don't think the whole thing all the way through. And that makes for some really, really stupid non-logic.

Hem. I have complicated feelings on this subject. While I want women to have the right to have an abortion, I don't think it is something I could do myself. I'm sure no one wants to go back to the days when women were doing it themselves with coathangers or using butchers who pretended to be doctors working under the table. I have a feeling it's going to be illegal again, and the whole vicious cycle will start over...

Like murder? Whew If that happens, our prisons are going to be way full.

Most people do--it's not really a decision where one rule for every single circumstance that it affects is going to be good. That's why it should remain in the hands of the people chosing to do it or not. Most people can say, without pause, that killing someone under most circumstances (barring war and self-defense) is wrong. But something like this? Yeah. Hard to say. Even after having one myself, I still maintain it's not for me, because I really do believe that 1) I'm killing something that already has a soul and 2) If I was dumb enough to get pregnant (which is what happened in that situation), then really, I'm still responsible for the well being of my child over my own comfort. But that's me. That isn't you, the person down the street, or anyone else. About the only time I'd think it would be all right to start preaching 'oh no you don't' is in the rare case of someone actually thinking abortion is the best method of birth control--to which I say 'no, it isn't, now go educate yourself and get out of my face'.

Considering I've only met one person like that my whole life, and it's no one I know now...I don't have much reason to get on the high and mighty chair. Your body, your choice. And you have to deal with the internal reactions afterward, good or bad or indifferent. End of statement.

Not only am I in favor of women being able to get an abortion if they feel the need, but I feel that in some cases there are people whose mothers should have had them retroactively.

There are days I feel that, too.

Just...erf. Think, people. Think. Research. Walk that mile in a different pair of shoes before you start mouthing off (or closing your ears). :/

Unfortunately, these people are so blinded by their "OMG MUST PROTECT THE BABIEZ!!!!ONE11!!" religious fervor that the idea of any possible retreat from the Absolute And Total Ban horrifies them.

There's even a Congresscritter who once said, on the Floor, that a woman can only get pregnant if she enjoys the sex, therefore if you get pregnant due to a rape, it wasn't really a rape. (....yeah, you know, I'm male, and I had the urge to go do something that would make the Capitol Police shoot me. For women, I'm suprised he didn't end up getting the Maenad Boyfriend Treatment.) That's the sort of mentality these people have. That's what the real fight is.

Eh. We'd have to dig all those flesh chunks out from under our nails for months to come. Yuck.

And...yeah, true. Sadly. I guess I'm too much a fan of 'if we could just seperate these people from their leaders for a short time and actually get some real education into their thick skull, they might actually get it'.

But...yeah. Hasn't happened yet, either. :P

Oh, that video got mentioned on metafilter, which led me to this:

http://shotsacrossthebow.com/weblog/images/prolifebeliefchart.gif

...which is a chart of how the 'pro-life' agenda is more organized towards punishing women for having sex rather than promoting a pro-child environment.
