Uh huh...

So, the federal government is going to be running, essentially, 'marriage is good!' adds, since the ratio of single folks to married is way way up (and of course, they're targeting the 20-30 age group. Why no love for the older folks, huh?).

I felt weirded out about that, though wasn't sure why for a little bit, and beyond the 'dear government, please to be staying out of my private life, 'kay? Thanks' thing.

Then I realized what the problem was.

Which is 'oh, so more promotion for monogamous, same sex marriage, with an undercurrent of religious obligation. GREAT!!!.

Not. But that's essentially what it'll be, I bet. :P

Also, the new company that's finally buying our hospital is apparently 'Christian run'. :/

I'll be fine with new restrictions (might lose the internet surfing and radio and have to wear, you know, an 'official' CS 'uniform (hopefully that means just specific color scrubs and not some ployester monstrocity that'll have me seating buckets on a 109 degree dock in summer), the intermittent drug tests, and maybe even not being allowed to eat lunch at my desk, but I'm just hoping they keep the religious stuff to themselves. Please. Normal 'professional operation rules' I can deal with. The religious morality rules, I can't.

And to qualify: I have no problem with the religion. What bothers me is when 'business rules' are used to enforce the religious beliefs. And many religiously run business do just that. If they avoid that, I'm cool. If not, it'll make me want to smack some people around with a large metal pole.

Oh, Reverend Phelps, when will you learn?.

This man (and his family, it would seem) just...gah.

I'd have a LOT less problem with this. Because it would be social norm, and for good reason.

These days? There's no need for it. And no, I don't buy the 'right to follow your religion' as an excuse.

Anyway, I'm ashamed of the state I live in. But, by the same token, it was our own fault for having such a huge fucking loophole in the law.

It does make me want to go to the people who made the decision, shake them, and then go, "So it's okay if we send your 12 year old female family members there, too? Because, really, if there's nothing wrong with what's going on, you shouldn't have a problem with that. Even if they wind up pregnant and married."

Way to go, Texas... )

Personally, I don't mind. I'll listen for a few moments, and I'll be polite and even smile. I might even engage you a little on the concepts and beliefs of your religion. It's no big deal; I'm secure in my own belief systems and path--I may doubt what will actually happen after I die will be postive, but I'm also quite fine with the concept of having to pay the price, if any, if I happen to be wrong. Again, no big deal.

So, yeah, I at least will be a patient audience.

Most people, though, will not be, for whatever reason. Even less so when the discussion stems from something else entirely. A few personal answers (no, I'm not married. I've been at this job for seven years) are not an open invite to discuss religion. Definitely not an invitation for you to hand me a pamplet out of your pocket that you keep for 'occasions such as this'.

Again, I'm tolerant of it. I know that you firmly believe you are doing the right thing, and as long as it's not done with pitchforks and a threat to my health or my life, I can handle letting you ramble on and giving me a piece of paper that will have little meaning for me.

You mean well. I get that.

Not everyone will. And that is one of the biggest reasons your religion (any religion that does this) gets detractors (and often violent, rude, cruel ones). People will follow their hearts. And they will do what it takes to make sure they have that choice for themselves.

Learn to wait and be open. It works better.

This public rambling brought on by getting sermonized to by a driver this morning. Even after I told him I'd been raised catholic.)

Now, I got the whole moral idea behind anti-abortionism. I don't agree with them, but I get where they're coming from, and I'm not exactly a fan of the procedure myself. They're as welcome to their opinion and how it affects their own lives as the next person though.

But get this.

Not one of these people can do anything but parrot the usual 'but it's taking a human life and that's wrong in the eyes of God!' line. They can't even get into the logistics of what it would mean and what would happen to the people involved in the activity if it were made illegal. Including the mother.

They don't seem to get that if this is made law, the women who had the abortions will be subject to said secular law just as much as the doctors and clinics who performed them. And if the law defines abortion as a form of murder...

Well...I'm sure those of you with half a brain cell can figure the rest out for yourself.

This is why just parroting a belief or idea or ideal is a really BAD thing, folks.

So...

Thinking of re-drawing my totem cards today and see what's in them. who's walking with me now.

For all of two seconds.

I never really paid much attention to him. My grandparents would switch him off and put on Benny Hen(sp?) instead.

He did a lot of harm, thinking he was doing a lot of good. Even so, he did us all a favor by being a living example of what not to do.

So for that, I'm thankful.

Where-ever he goes now, I hope that he learns something, that his soul gets a little older and a lot wiser and gains some sort of vision other than the one that kills everything, including itself when it's done with everyone else. And I hope none of us forget what he taught by bad example...so that the next one to take his place has that many less followers, and that much less room to move. Because we'll know to avoid it.

Peace, to you guys, and to him.

Lord knows. He's gonna need it.

So, it's national prayer day. Eheh.

Annnnd...I may have just managed to scare a bunch of people, depending on how far they talk. (Answer: Probably very far indeed; people likes the gossip around here).

Because...yeah...couple of housekeeping folks around the time clock when I was checking in, looking at the sign that announced the chaplin would be in all day to pray for/with people. And of course, I was asked when I would go.

I tried to get out of it without too much exchange by saying 'Won't have time, and I pray differently anyway'.

That, and the next seven questions weren't into letting it drop.

Until I shrugged and said 'Because I'm not Christian.'

Cue wall-eyed stares, you know, the ones that say 'you mean there are other religions?!'

And of course, when one of them recovered from the shock, the inevitable question got asked.

'What are you?'

'...pagan.'

And so I finally managed to escape in the wake of a bunch of more wall-eyed stares.

This should be fun to see how far around this gets and how many people start acting funky.

I'm also half-tempted to raid the 'chapel'...just to see what the good father could do for me.

Thing is though, that's just fucking with people. So...no.

Ah well.

For those of you who don't know about St. Patrick driving the 'snakes', AKA: Druids, out of Ireland, and just use this day to celebrate being (or wanting to be) Irish, or to go out and just have a damned good time with your friends, Happy St. Patrick's day.

For those of you who do, and hold onto that, you have my condolences, and I will have a moment of silence to remember what existed (and is being regained by some) before the christians came before I go and have my fun.

No matter who you are, have a good day, love your friends and family and enemies, and don't be an idiot about drinking and then doing stupid things like driving drunk.

--Anne Campbell, daughter of Argyll on my dad's side, and the Magees and the Murphys on my mom's, raised catholic, and now pagan. And proud of all of it.
