On hunting...(and fishing)

Okay. Fine. Among my ancestors, it's called 'the sport of kings'.
For a long time a hunt or safari was a way of proving penis size among a cache of males. For some uneducated shit-heads, it still is.
But, you know, some of us got it from the people who wound up having to feed themselves once they got here to the states (Yo, hello there Appalachia). And yeah, the tradition still carries (or would have, had I been male). Thing is? We still do it for food--what gets caught gets eaten. What gets shot, gets killed. No random, bleeding to death animals left in our wake. No over-hunting or fishing either. We get enough (or less) to last until the next season over. And we don't go every year.
And there are many, many others who still hunt that way. In fact, the kids are taught 'do not waste' and 'do not leave them to die if you injure them--or if anyone else does for that matter either'.
So. Yeah. Not all white folk who go out and catch their own food are trophy-hunting/fishing retards...or even rich. Some of us actually use what we catch. Please to make that distinction? Thanks.

Date: 2007-08-28 02:01 pm (UTC)the appeal of hunting is lost on me, and no doubt there are a bunch of trophy hunting/fishing retards, but... that's a pretty dumb thing to say. blanket statements for the lose.

Date: 2007-08-28 02:10 pm (UTC)I couldn't really explain the 'appeal' to you--other than from a personal level, which is my dad's side of the family traditionally goes and looks for wild game sometimes--fishing, hunting, etc. By the same token, we're taught all the common sense and respectful rules. Some of it, I think, is we want to keep the skills alive, beause everyone gets the chacne to learn to fish and the guys the chance to hunt if they want. I think it's also an independence thing. But trophy hunting and bragging rights? Not so much.

Date: 2007-08-28 02:29 pm (UTC)*Nods* yeah, Dad's side is all about the independence. Take care of yourself, make sure you can take care of whatever comes your way if you can, and then make sure you got some left-over for other folks that might need what they can't get themselves when they get into a spot.
Yep--earning it makes it taste better. ^^
Also, it's a nice feeling to know you're capable of fetching and growing your own food (we do gardens and mini-orchards, too. *g*) should everything go to hell. *g*.

Date: 2007-08-28 07:24 pm (UTC)While there are a lot of RAR BE MANLY KILL ANIMAL people here in Alaska, it usually coincides with a subsistence/provide a healthy alternative to store-bought meat for my family sort of thing. Hunts are carefully regulated here (such as, having to pay and put in your name for a drawing for elk/goat/etc) as is fishing, such as a daily limit, specific opening and closing dates for fisheries and whatnot.
And if there is someone going after that massive 384294853098457 point buck and generally being a stupid motherfucker in general, the fish/game cops (or random parts of nature such as, uh, BEARS) will have their way with said stupid mofo and they won't be able to hunt for awhile, if ever again. :B
But, yeah. Rambling. Agreed!
