My mother attempted to call last night. I say attempted because we leave our answering machine on and screen our calls. She called, listened to the message, hung up. Mate and I ignored, as is our usual bent when the caller chooses to remain quiet. I found her name and number on the caller ID later.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. She tries every few years...but it's usually around my birthday. I don't call her back. I really don't want to. She had the first twelve years of my life to beat me for any reason from I didn't clean my room, to 'I gave her a funny look', tear out my hair with a metal comb, rub my face in my own pee when I had a bed-wetting problem, screeching 'that's how we teach animals not to do it!', and so forth.

Not to mention being used as some sort of cheap pawn and/or door prize for her and her mother to try and maniupulate against each other when I got older.

Yeah, I have good reason not to want to talk to her.

It doesn't keep me from wondering what spawned the attempt this time. Is she feeling nostalgic, or has her mother finally died? Either way, I know that if I did answer it, I would end up playing host to all her miserable times the past years, and incidentally, be told how to run my own life, in the least complimentary way.

I'm not that curious...

Actually, she doted on the cats. Anything at all went wrong, and she was a model 'cat parent', right down to marching them to the vet immediately if something even seemed wrong. They got yearly shots, spayed, hours of loving....The worst they ever got was a squirt bottle (and front declaw to save the furniture, but that was it)...

Appearently, having opposable thumbs disqualified me from similar treatment...
