But here's my attempt at using water color pencils.

Obviously, I got frustrated enough to resort to the familiarity of regular colored pencils for the beads, lips, and eyes. :P

I'm...not sure what I think of it.

Also, I did the beads last week, when I really couldn't see. The highlights will be added with the hair. When I feel brave enough to break into the gouche set.

Thanks. First attmept ever. I tried for that salt speckling effect in certain areas, but I think I need actual paints for that one to work well.

I also warped the hell out of the paper from too much water. :/

It was a learning experience. I think I'll stick to landscaping with them until I get a better handle on the medium.

What kind of paper are you using? Try hot press watercolor paper, if you can lay your hands on some. See if you can get it in a block instead of in a pad.

You know what else is cool? Pastels on wet printmaking paper like Rives BFK. If you try that use your cheap pastels because it will eat them alive. You won't get fine detail but MAN the COLOR!

Cold press, 1...50? weight. in a pad. I'll give the other a try when my budget is a little more stable and not bring eaten up by the stupid eyedrops (seven dollars for a box that lasts only two days if I'm following doctor's instructions, and since it's over the counter stuff, my insurance won't cover it. :/).

Hee. Another two things to put aside on my 'want the art' list.

I tend to stick with stuff in pencil form (including my pastels) for the very simple reason that I'm 1) messy and 2) usally reduced to using a lap-table when I work. The less stuff I have to chase around and make room for and clean up after, the better.

If I didn't toss boxes, I'd be the arch typical 'starving artist'. :)
