To Resident Evil: Extinction

I got the DVD for free as part of a movie pack. Mostly, I've been throwing it in for background noise, and because even though I know it's pretty far from Resident Evil game canon, it's entertaining in it's own right.

Tonight's the first time I actually paid enough attention to the last minutes to see Alice one and two take on the baddie. And then to see the very end of the movie (I usually lose track right around when Carlos buys the farm).

But, yeah, the thought of an entire army of Alices?

Makes me giggle. Because it's so...absurd. Especially after establishing at the beginning of the movie that none of the clones can apparently even make it out of the Raccoon City mock-up without dying horribly.

The thought is 'damn, she's going to have to spend a LOT of time teaching them how not to die, first'.

Heh.

I think the second Alice watched the first one get through the mockup -- and then downloaded that info to the others, so they all hatched badass.

Probably.

I think my problem is like most fans of the game. It was survival horror, so with the intro of Alice, the movies pretty much skittered away from that concept and into something else--more like comic book horror than what the original genre was about. So when taken in relation to the games, it seems more silly than bad ass.

Divorce the movies from the games though, and it becomes okay as a spin-off genres like anime and the like, where the story arc is not uncommon.

The reason they went so far off true from the game is that historically, video game movies that hold true to the game don't do well in the box office, so they had to try something different.

I think of it as an AU.

Oh, I know. They...just went a little too far, I think. I was okay with 'enhanced Alice', but when it got to 'blow everything to bit with my mind like River Tam' Alice, it kinda lost me as being part of the RE world.

I think of it as something similar to RE, but but not really part of it, even as an AU.

I've actually written snippets of OtherAlices trying to figure things out. I have some of them doing some pretty extreme stuff to their bodies to try to differentiate, some just not caring. It's really fun to write. And yeah, none of them are as badass as the original, but they're working hard to find their place. I also kill several of them messily.

I do have small imaginings of Original!Alice still screwing up with trying to kill people with her brain. Not enough practice.

Oh, and they psychically mind-meld with each other through a satellite up-link. This gives them bloody noses and horrible headaches, but is a good way to communicate in the boonies.

Yes, I was completely shameless in my writing, but dammit, I had FUN.

Yeah, on it's own, the idea is pretty interesting. Just that it doesn't fit in well with the original RE concepts. But all the permutations of what each clone does, how they act, what they do to differentiate or not would be fun to explore, but at that point, I feel that we've left the RE universe. Kinda like the Derek I play really isn't Derek-from-the-movie anymore.

Never played the games. I actually rather dislike video games. This might be because I REALLY suck at them. But I LOVE the stories. As a result, the movies like Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within, Advent Children, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill are all VERY appealing to me.

The Final Fantasy ones are actually mostly menu-run (click on the choices you want for each round--the computer does the rest) when it comes time to fight. Only the most recent (12) starts to veer from that formula, and even then, it's more of a 'run up to the monster and then pick your choice from the menu' thing. The rest of the time is spent walking, exploring, searching, and talking, so you might like it (getting the guide book helps too, for when you get OMG!STUCK!, which is often one of my problems. :) ).

And yeah, I play video games as much for story as for game playing, so I get you there. :)

You should see me try (try being the operative word, there) playing the RE games. Half the time I run right into the monsters rather than away.

We won't even talk about games like Mortal Combat and Paradise Burnout, and my mad (not) skills in them. *g*
