Stupid realization, but I had it.

This stuff that I've been kicking around as a solo project in my head since...man...years in the past? The one where I keep messing around with the world, the origin of the characters, and so forth, but rarely get very far into the story itself? I finally figured out why I keep setting it aside.

I was telling myself I was world/plot building for the book. My brain knew better.

I'm trying to set up a gaming world. I'm just too dense to realize it. :P

Right, then.

Now that I know what I'm actually trying to build, here...(and yeah, actual stories may come later, but I just realized that how I'm going about developing the world and what my brain is actually focused on makes for a better structure for building an RPG world with, rather than, say, a series of books, which is what it was supposed to be originally).

Way to trip myself out, there.

...and what the hell am I going to do with an RPG world?

:)

It helps, knowing what you're actually trying to do.

going to put it all together as source material that can be used generically on any system and then self publish it through any of the various methods of doing exactly that.

So people publish without an attached system these days? (I'm used to seeing RPG worlds packaged as their own little system...or as part part of an already established larger one).

That would be cool. :)

I've not done a lot of looking into RPG lately... something about the lack of gamers in my area I've felt I could game with. You could package it to work with the D20 system, much of that has been made 'open source' or you could go more generic and let people adapt to their own systems. Either way, concentrate first on the source material... the world, who populates it, the social dynamics, politics, etc. Worry about the system last.

Believe me, the system will be dead last as far as what I work on. And even if I did the system myself, it would probably end up being one of the simpler ones, such as Mekton/R. Talisorian. I'm not the mathematicion of the family, after all. ;)
