Seriously, it makes me laugh.
Yesterday: the Eagle DJs are all over the whole over-weight thing, spouting the usual 'fat people are just lazy', 'fat people have no self control', 'fat people eat junk food', 'it's okay to tell your SO they're too fat and if they don't lose weight, then it's over', etc.
You know, all the stereotypical BS, that of course gets back-pedaled on when someone goes 'well, what about medical problems? What about mental conditions? What about genetic factors?'.
Still, the bottom line was 'fat people need to lose weight!' (and that includes most folks who are a mere 10 pounds overweight, or have a BMI over...god, I think it was 20...when BMI is NOT the best indicator of fat in a body).
So anyhow, this morning, I turn the radio on again, and this time, guess what? They're bitching about their wives cooking healthy food, and making subs in foods like lasagna so that it's better and low fat and low sodium and the like. And of course, one of them is pissed off because the wife has gone vegan in an effort to...guess what?
Lose Weight
I have only one thing to say (and listen up, boys; this is important).
You cannot have it both ways..
Make up your fucking minds, chose one, and shut the fuck up. Want a skinny wife? Put up with what she does to get herself (and probably you) that way.
Or leave her the fuck alone about the weight.

Date: 2008-02-05 07:06 pm (UTC)The excuse that they're 'helping' people with obesity is complete bullshit. If a 'fat person' can't eat out, they'll just go home and do it on their own, or hit up the fast food joints until those get resitrictions put on them as well.
If they want to control obesity through the food industry, than the restrictions need to be put on the industry's side--better quality fresh food, better alternatives to the oils and over salting, a return to reasonable portions (do away with the supersize, for god's sake). Yeah, it'll cost the consumer more, but I tnink in all honesty, that's a better way to 'keep' obese folks from eating out as much, anyway. Restaurant food is really no better for you than fast food, and like fast food, should be a treat. And like all treats. if you have the money for it (and the attendant possibility of screwing your life uop because of it), so be it.
It's up to people to police themselves, really. Sure, if you have a loved one who is starving themselves to death, or eating themselves to death, or drimking themselves to death, etc, then yeah, as a loved one (or, to a limited extebt, a doctor of the suffering person), you have some right to get into that person's life and say something and/or do something about the situation.
But it isn't the place of government or total strangers to decide if you need that kind of 'help'.

Date: 2008-02-05 07:14 pm (UTC)Those that don't will resort to buying more food at the store--much of which will likely be the 'junk' food and easy to make deals, which are cheaper to make, worse for you, one of the biggest causes of obesity, and also has ties back into government programs and/or deals with major compnaies that produce the stuff. Either way, they'll make money off the over-weight population.

Date: 2008-02-05 07:24 pm (UTC)I mean, hell, look at the profit Exxon/Mobile made last year...and yet our gas prices were awful...and are going to get worse this year. That's a visible example of how this works. Supply and demand at its most potent and least advantageous for the consumer.

Date: 2008-02-05 07:09 pm (UTC)Put the money and efforts to providing extra education in school where it will make the most impact and give the kids access to all the reasons why they need to watch their weight and what they eat. All an adult 'denied' something is going to think about is how their rights are infringed upon. It won't do a damn thing to get them to quit.
