How people are being sent home early or when they show up for shift, or are even told not to show up at all for a usual shift because 'there isn't enough budget' due to lack of patients.

And yet we can blow $70,000 on new Dell computers with no problem (When we JUST GOT a bunch of new comps two years ago).

It's moments like this that make me really hate our system, you know?

Don't worry. I'll get over it.

I've asked about that sort of thing before, and the answer I received is that computers fall as capital expenses, and it's in a different part of the budget. It's not so much that the overall budget has shortfalls, it's that the part of the budget that covers payroll has shortfalls, and money can't be moved from one part to another after the fiscal year has started and the budget is set. Or words to that effect. It all depends on how your bylaws are written if it can be changed mid-year or not. However, you'd *think* that if the board of directors wanted to change something bad enough that they could.

It sucks for the humans drones involved in the scenario. It's not just the paycheck money that the employee is missing out on, it's also extra stuff like matching 401(k) contributions. No paycheck = no contribution, and no contribution = no matching contribution. A bad situation overall.

Well, yes, that's the point, though. Between bylaws and crappy planning, the people actually doing the jobs that all this nifty equipment is for aren't there to use the shit in the first place, so it's a huge waste in money all around.

But since the focus is on 'nifty shit' and keeping up with the Joneses, rather than treating the employees well and giving them support they need (which would actually benefit the compnay more--happy employees fucntion better, even if they don't have 'up to date' stuff to help them). And in a service industry, they're cutting their throats even further, because those people who cna still afford medical services, cna also afford to be picky.

So, knowing that, are you going to go to the understaffed hospital with the stressed out employess that just might screw everything up due to said stress, or are you going to seek out one where they have plenty of staff that are happy, are less stressed fro, overwork and therefore taking more pride and care with their work?

Yeah. :/

Maybe what you all need is a good old fashioned investigative reporter to publish some articles on current practices and get the public all outraged and clamoring for change. You know, kind of like what Woodward and Bernstein did for Nixon during Watergate, only less extreme. You know any journalists you can feed stories to?

Not really. And this really is a nationwide/economy wide thing, not just where I work. It's the system itself, not an isolated case. I just happen to be in more of a position to be privy to it than most because of my job.
