So we're having 'Town Hall' Meetings this week to get everyone their paperwork to get ready to become Baylor.

Apologies to the faithful, but I kinda cringed when the first thing out of the Baylor Rep's mouth was 'we are a faith based business'.

The flashback to CCD (Catholic Sunday School) when the start of the 'This is why Baylor is cool' video when it started, with people lighting mass candles to the song of 'This Little Light of Mine' (Ah, memories of church choir!) to make a flame (their company symbol) made it a little worse, but I was ok after a few moments when they actually got to the business side of things.

Until, of course, we got to the 'you will have to apply for your job at orientation'. They're saying we still all have our jobs, but, yanno, I don't exactly trust that, now.

Guess we'll see if I'm living in North Carolina with my dad in a couple of months, huh?

I'm trying to remind myself that 'this is just a formality', but you know, recession, seeing how other 'faith based' companies have been treating their 'valued' employees lately (Tony Zaza was booted out from his job at The Mix by Clearchannel with no warning whatever about a month ago, as in, he did the show that morning, apparently was called into a meeting after broadcast, and that was it. Gone.), and...yeah.

Drug testing? OK, cool. Might have to find enough money to get a couple of new uniforms (we're getting 'color coded', yay! :P)? Ok. It'll kill my budget, but whatever (I asked if they'd pay for the new uniforms, and the answer was 'we've never done it before, but this is a unique situation'...which is usually business speak for 'no, but we're trying not to freak you out'). Have to spend a few hours in various orientations to redo my 401k, insurance, whatever so that it's with the new company? Cool.

But this whole 'reapply for your job' thing, after three transitions with other companies where that didn't happen really, really makes me nervous.

...gah. I'm trying not to freak out...also trying not to associate Bad Things Happening just because this is a religiously based business. But I'm having a really hard time with that right now. :/

...I need hugs, I think.

ETA: Forgot to add...they're also checking everyone's credit rating.
Yeah...WTF? Which, if they needed as an excuse for firing me, ATM, they could (and since I'm receiving, and, you know, handle EXPENSIVE SHIT all the time...yeah. OK. Yeah. I'd never steal a damn thing, but what the hell does my credit rating have to do with being able to do my job?).

I'm sure everything will be okay. The "interviewing for your own job" thing -- being honest, that's always really scary, but think about it. You've been doing that job for years on end; anyone challenging you for it will be like someone trying to box Mike Tyson fresh out of their first gym.

And RE: your ETA... yeah, it's kinda hard to not feel like a huge fucking idiot/failure right now.

True, for the most part, but I'm still feeling a little guarded about it. I know the job, but I also have a decade's worth of experience of doing it a certain way (and there's my pay level to consider, and how much above or below it currently is compared to what Baylor thinks it's worth).

And I've known big corporate companies to 'let go' of someone for 1) age (I'm almost 40, it's arguable that I may not be physically capable for much longer), 2) Pay rate (recession, and if they can get someone they can pay less to, they just might decide that's more 'cost effective'), and 3) In all honesty, they sound like they have a definite way of doing things, and if they decide it would be easier to train someone from the ground up (or bring them in from another facility), they might decide to do that instead of keeping me.

And unlike medical staff, overall, other than already having a 'relationship' with my truckers and the hospital staff, my job is not really all that hard to learn, or do. You just need a strong body, willingness to work until it's done, and the ability to input invoices into a computer. I'm actually pretty replacable within the scheme of a large corporation, about on the same level as a housekeeper (With maybe a month's more training involved because of the invoice thing).

YARGH. WTF on the credit thing, but if it's any consolation, as the shippers of the really expensive shit? I know of at least one person at work who had declared bankruptcy AND can't get a corporate credit card was checked... and hired. I think they're looking for people who have debt that is at least equivalent to a year's pay or something like that.

With the credit check thing-it is pretty standard in most employment now. They are mainly looking to not hire someone very irresponsible. A bunch of charge-offs and many late payments can be indicative of someone that is irresponsible. I am referring to non-medical charge offs and a pattern of late payments. Several late payments or medical bills is much different

Well, I had the 'late payment' payment problem late last year, but I've gotten back on track since then, so I'm hoping they see that fact and not just the 'late payments!' part. My credit over all is pretty fried right now, but I'm in the process of digging out.

The credit check thing is still a little freaky for me; it used to be reserved only for jobs where you were actually handling money or making big money orders for your company. The fact that it's gotten over all so bad in the job market that it's necessary for a majority of workers speaks volumns about a lot of things...

I think employers use it as part of a measure of how the employee will be.

If you have a period in the past of late payments but are current, employers understand that everyone goes through tough patches. But if someone has a bunch of charge-offs and a long period of late payments (or sporadic patches of them) it can indicate a person that is not very responsible.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Coupled with your work history (which they can readily access since it isn't like you are applying at a completely different company) that should negate a less than perfect credit report.

And I had a credit check done when I applied for my current job six years ago. and I don't handle money in any shape or form
