ok....so it seems I have two folks at least who are interested if I get an FF game going, right?

Anyone else? Roll call please. Even if you're just thinking 'maybe' (especially since I don't have a lot of info up at the moment), let me know. It'll help me design things, you see.

I will also be honest and say that it will likely be at least a month before it starts--I want to be able to take the time to design the world, get info together, and even ask potential players about their characters so that I can weave some of that into the actual storyline and/or world. I like free-form, but I also like having connections that actually pertain to specific characters and with what the players are doing or wanting to do--makes it easier to get folks involved on a game-wide scale if some of the encounters and plot points have factors that 'call' to charaters specifically.

At the moment, what's going on in my head:

Most likely it'll be an original world--I might 'borrow' the concept from KH and/or the nexus of a few dimensional rifts to allow for the appearance of canon characters, or take Dave's suggestion and have canon c's being 'drawn' to this new world to help deal with whatever's going on. I might also borrow known locations from the various games, such as the Calm Lands or The Golden Saucer. What do you guys think?

I already have a few ideas bouncing around in general, and am thinking of bouncing them off you guys (yes, I rule by committee often), and will likely share them here, although I may end up flocking those in the future.

Also, again, if you've been reading along, and it sounds like fun, but you don't know the genre, don't feel shy about asking to play anyway. I can provide info and even links to the CGI cuts from some of the games so that you can get a feel for what Final Fantasy is all about, and things like weapons and spells and how all that is set up is easily exlained. And since it'll likely be a new world, you won't have to worry about 'messing up' in regards to knowing info from the games about places, people, or even plots.

Like I stated already, I'm in.

I'd definitely be up for making an OC, and I'd be willing to run a canon character as well if we need to. I'd like to take another run at playing Cloud (sans Advent Children).

You can do both, or either. That part is up to the players, and I'm cool with it either way. I can figure out a way to get a canon pup there, and I'm actually good at weaving priginals into a world of the player and I can get together and work on history and stuff together. :) When I DM, I tend to be all about the players (although I RP too), so I'll be able to fit whatever it is you come up with just fine. :)

So, if you want to do an OC, go for it. If you want to bring Cloud in, I'm down with that as well.

I'll see whether the majority is going for OC's or canon characters. Though it would be kind of cool to have a veteran with a party of rookie adventurers to look after. LOL

I'm torn my own self. I've never played anything other than AD&D, and that was back in the Dark Ages when we used Pencils and Paper and Books and stuff. And, I don't know if I'll have the time to dedicate to learning it for a few months yet (that is, till John is done with school. I'm neglecting the girl horribly at the moment; all three of us are on separate computers. I'm on LJ, John's in class, and the girl is playing on noggin.com.)
But I wouldn't mind finding out more.

Well, Final Fantasy started as, basically, D&D meets anime as a video game. :)

It's evolved since then--although the character 'classes' are, for the most part, still recognizable within the characters that are presented.

In regards to game mechanics, the way this would work is that you would make a live journal for you character, and depending on how we work it out, you would either post to a community for the game, or on the character's journal when your character is initaiting something, and other people would respond on that character's journal (if someone else were initiating, you;d repsond on their journal instead.)

Stats and stuff are kinda fudged, since it's pretty hard to reliably roll dice online. :) So you'd start out with a set of informaation that tells you what your character can do, and then you'd post with that info in mind. Obviously, that means players are on the honor system, but everyone I know here knows how to play fair (and now to communicate outside of the game to come to agreements on what will happen when character a does something to chaarcter b).

So, I guess you could call it imrov theater in a text medium.

As for time--it'll take me at least a month to set up the world anyway, and I want to get together with each player and talk about what they want to do anyway and get at least a simple history set up for each character so that they 'fit' into the world and plot. So there's plenty of time. As for when the game starts, since it's text based, I don't see where there would be a problem if it takes time in between people posting. Again, folks I play with are pretty gorwn up and understand things like 'I have a real life' and sudden things like 'Uh oh gotta go because the kid just lit the cat on fire, we'll pick up again tomorrow', or 'sorry guys, but my job is eating my online time for the next week' type situations. :)

Anyhow, I'll be glad to answer any questions you have, show you clips from the video games this game will be based on, direct you to some good examples of RP in other gaming journals so you cna get an idea of what's going on, etc. :)

My favorite character I ever played was a nonhuman magic user-thief with a prehensile tail named Grey Rowan Smythe. She had an invisibility cloak as well and a mean streak, and was all lesbian with one of the other players (a guy playing a girl character). Needless to say it was not a traditional AD&D game :)

I expect FF is a bit more complicated than AD&D.

....you'll fit in just fine once you get the hang of the genre, I think. *g*

The dude in the icon is from Final Fantasy X

These are the 'story' animations and/or intro animations for the final fantasy video games on the playstation systems. If nothign else, it'll give you a feel for how it 'looks'

The folder with the FFX cutscenes has the frist 22 scenes, includes some of the actual game play, and give you an idea of how the storylines often run.

Anyhow, just random animations (with Bon Jovi--a plus!

Also, here's an online comic spoof of the original Final Fantasy game--using sprites from the original game. It's goofy as hell, but it should give you and idea of how the thing started, and what genre it was wandering around in.

I'm an old school D&D gamer myself, even up to present day. A lot of the things that are present in D&D are present in the Final Fantasy games as well. Basic "classes" (Fighter, mages, clerics, thieves, etc.) are present as well, though many characters tend to fall into a grey area between these classes.

The cool thing about the Final Fantasy series is that all of the games take place in a different "world", each with its own flavor. Some of these are very much like D&D, with that vaguely Dark Ages Europe type of flavor, to steampunk. And Final Fantasy VII was very modernized, with motorcycles, machineguns, cellphones, etc. that were fit into a fantasy background.

But for all of the different worlds, there are certain key elements that are present in all of the games. Airships are one thing, as are the creatures known as Moogles and Chocobos. Certain legendary weapons, items, and summoned forces are the same as well.

Aside from the videos Anne provided, I'd suggest entering "Final Fantasy" in a Wiki Search, and just surf around and look at what sounds interesting to you. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm just having trouble getting my head around existing video. I mean, I'm not a gamer (I'm not allowed to be. John said if we get me a game machine I'd never pay any attention to him, and he's probably right. The internet is bad enough as it is) so I'm not used to graphic representations of RPG, and when I was playing all the time...1987-1990, that is...all this business only existed only in our heads.

Anne, am I correct in assuming that what you propose is in text-format? So it's still kind of old-school? Or is it a play-along video type thing, about which I know nothing?

Text format right here on LJ. I'm just showing you video from the games so you cna get an idea of how the stories developed in the games. And since it'll be an original world, there'll be a similar flavor, but the world itself will be dofferent.

And, yes, all in our heads.

Like Derek's journal, here. :)

In fact, here...this is a memory page that has some of the RP I did with Derek. The RP itselfg was based mostly in the Vampires 'universe' from the movies, but the people I was playing with were playing Jun (Princess) and Joe (Jason) from Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets), so it was a cross-over kind of thing.

But this is about how the RP will look like and run.
