ok....so it seems I have two folks at least who are interested if I get an FF game going, right?
Anyone else? Roll call please. Even if you're just thinking 'maybe' (especially since I don't have a lot of info up at the moment), let me know. It'll help me design things, you see.
I will also be honest and say that it will likely be at least a month before it starts--I want to be able to take the time to design the world, get info together, and even ask potential players about their characters so that I can weave some of that into the actual storyline and/or world. I like free-form, but I also like having connections that actually pertain to specific characters and with what the players are doing or wanting to do--makes it easier to get folks involved on a game-wide scale if some of the encounters and plot points have factors that 'call' to charaters specifically.
At the moment, what's going on in my head:
Most likely it'll be an original world--I might 'borrow' the concept from KH and/or the nexus of a few dimensional rifts to allow for the appearance of canon characters, or take Dave's suggestion and have canon c's being 'drawn' to this new world to help deal with whatever's going on. I might also borrow known locations from the various games, such as the Calm Lands or The Golden Saucer. What do you guys think?
I already have a few ideas bouncing around in general, and am thinking of bouncing them off you guys (yes, I rule by committee often), and will likely share them here, although I may end up flocking those in the future.
Also, again, if you've been reading along, and it sounds like fun, but you don't know the genre, don't feel shy about asking to play anyway. I can provide info and even links to the CGI cuts from some of the games so that you can get a feel for what Final Fantasy is all about, and things like weapons and spells and how all that is set up is easily exlained. And since it'll likely be a new world, you won't have to worry about 'messing up' in regards to knowing info from the games about places, people, or even plots.

Date: 2008-01-24 09:16 pm (UTC)I'd definitely be up for making an OC, and I'd be willing to run a canon character as well if we need to. I'd like to take another run at playing Cloud (sans Advent Children).

Date: 2008-01-25 12:29 am (UTC)It's evolved since then--although the character 'classes' are, for the most part, still recognizable within the characters that are presented.
In regards to game mechanics, the way this would work is that you would make a live journal for you character, and depending on how we work it out, you would either post to a community for the game, or on the character's journal when your character is initaiting something, and other people would respond on that character's journal (if someone else were initiating, you;d repsond on their journal instead.)
Stats and stuff are kinda fudged, since it's pretty hard to reliably roll dice online. :) So you'd start out with a set of informaation that tells you what your character can do, and then you'd post with that info in mind. Obviously, that means players are on the honor system, but everyone I know here knows how to play fair (and now to communicate outside of the game to come to agreements on what will happen when character a does something to chaarcter b).
So, I guess you could call it imrov theater in a text medium.
As for time--it'll take me at least a month to set up the world anyway, and I want to get together with each player and talk about what they want to do anyway and get at least a simple history set up for each character so that they 'fit' into the world and plot. So there's plenty of time. As for when the game starts, since it's text based, I don't see where there would be a problem if it takes time in between people posting. Again, folks I play with are pretty gorwn up and understand things like 'I have a real life' and sudden things like 'Uh oh gotta go because the kid just lit the cat on fire, we'll pick up again tomorrow', or 'sorry guys, but my job is eating my online time for the next week' type situations. :)
Anyhow, I'll be glad to answer any questions you have, show you clips from the video games this game will be based on, direct you to some good examples of RP in other gaming journals so you cna get an idea of what's going on, etc. :)

Date: 2008-01-25 12:47 am (UTC)I expect FF is a bit more complicated than AD&D.

Date: 2008-01-25 12:57 am (UTC)The folder with the FFX cutscenes has the frist 22 scenes, includes some of the actual game play, and give you an idea of how the storylines often run.
Anyhow, just random animations (with Bon Jovi--a plus!

Date: 2008-01-25 03:31 am (UTC)The cool thing about the Final Fantasy series is that all of the games take place in a different "world", each with its own flavor. Some of these are very much like D&D, with that vaguely Dark Ages Europe type of flavor, to steampunk. And Final Fantasy VII was very modernized, with motorcycles, machineguns, cellphones, etc. that were fit into a fantasy background.
But for all of the different worlds, there are certain key elements that are present in all of the games. Airships are one thing, as are the creatures known as Moogles and Chocobos. Certain legendary weapons, items, and summoned forces are the same as well.
Aside from the videos Anne provided, I'd suggest entering "Final Fantasy" in a Wiki Search, and just surf around and look at what sounds interesting to you. :)

Date: 2008-01-25 03:37 am (UTC)Anne, am I correct in assuming that what you propose is in text-format? So it's still kind of old-school? Or is it a play-along video type thing, about which I know nothing?
